$115m election bribe: Former Akwa Ibom State governor arrested

A former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for collecting N450 million from the $115 million (about N23.3 billion) bribe allegedly offered by the Presidency for the 2015 general election.

The money was said to have been given out by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Most of those who benefitted from the slush fund were chieftains of the then ruling party at the federal level, the Peoples Democratic Party, and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Nkanga is a chieftain of the PDP.
He was said to have been arrested in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The money, deposited in cash with Fidelity Bank Plc by Alison-Madueke, was said to have been converted into Naira, with Nkanga receiving the N450 million in two tranches.

A staff of Fidelity Bank in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Saint-Anthony Ejiowu, was said to have given the money to Nkanga.
The first ranch was N350 million, while the second was N100 million.
Nkanga signed for both.
