Instagram has been accused of endangering the welfare of troubled teenagers after failing to remove a suicide note a student posted to the app for more than 24 hours.Nathaniel Hassan, 18, uploaded a harrowing video announcing his intent to take his own life on Wednesday, before going through with the act in a wooded area near Mandeville, Louisiana.
Scores of distraught friends messaged the Mandeville High School senior and pleaded with him not to do it, asking him to call them to talk. However, their messages were ignored.
The 12-second clip, which was seen by more than 15,000 people and had 900 comments before it was finally taken down on Thursday, began with Hassan saying, ‘Hey, so, I’m killing myself. Goodbye.’
Outraged mental health experts criticized the social media app for acting so slowly in removing the tragic clip, saying it was dangerous and could inspire copycats.
